One of the most reliable ways to verify EGR flow through live data is to monitor the reaction of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Since the exhaust gases are introduced into the intake manifold downstream of the MAF sensor, opening the EGR valve should naturally cause a decrease in the amount of fresh air being pulled through the intake. While the vehicle is at a steady idle or a controlled cruise, command the EGR valve to open using your scan tool’s bidirectional controls. You should see an immediate drop in the MAF reading. If the MAF value remains constant while the EGR is commanded open, it indicates that the passages are likely clogged with carbon, even if the valve's motor is technically moving. This level of data-driven confirmation is what separates a true diagnostic professional from a parts-changer.
